This guide to honeycomb blind insulation explains why cellular blinds are such an effective answer for conservatories, orangeries and roof lanterns, and what to consider before choosing a made-to-measure system.

How honeycomb blind insulation works

Honeycomb blinds are made from fabric formed into neat, air-filled cells. When the blind is closed, those cells create a barrier between the glass and the room. Still air is a useful insulator, so the cellular structure slows the movement of heat through the glazing.

In winter, this helps reduce the rate at which warmth escapes through windows or roof glazing. In summer, it limits the amount of solar heat entering the room. The result is not a heating or air-conditioning replacement, and no blind can make poor glazing perform like a solid roof. What honeycomb blinds cannot do

Honest expectations lead to better decisions. Honeycomb blinds improve the thermal comfort of glazing, but they do not repair failed double glazing, stop water ingress or solve major structural heat loss elsewhere in the extension.

They also work differently from external shading. Exterior awnings or shutters can stop some solar energy before it reaches the glass, which can be particularly effective on very exposed elevations. Internal cellular blinds remain an excellent choice where you want a neat, integrated solution, insulation after dark, privacy and controllable daylight without changing the outside appearance of the property.

If overheating is severe, it is worth looking at the wider picture: glazing specification, roof ventilation, opening windows, orientation and whether external shading is feasible. Blinds should form part of a sensible comfort strategy, not carry the entire burden alone.

Caring for cellular roof blinds

Honeycomb fabrics need very little maintenance. Regularly remove loose dust with a soft brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner set to low suction, taking care not to distort the cells. For minor marks, follow the fabric care guidance supplied with the blind and avoid soaking the material or using harsh household cleaners.

Motorised systems should be operated as intended and kept clear of obstacles. If a blind begins to run unevenly, hesitates or appears to be under strain, stop using it and seek advice rather than repeatedly forcing it. A properly specified, professionally fitted system should give dependable day-to-day operation with minimal attention.
